The Academy of Geography, Sociology and International Studies (GSIS) was formed in July 2024. Bringing together HKBU’s long-established Departments of Geography, Sociology and Government and International Studies, the new Academy endeavours to support research and teaching excellence in our traditional disciplines, alongside the active fostering of transdisciplinary education and knowledge generation.
We are a diverse community, encompassing senior and junior academics, research students and undergraduates. We come from a wide variety of backgrounds: many from Hong Kong and mainland China, but also from numerous countries in every part of the world. And we study a very broad range of subjects from numerous intellectual perspectives. What unites us across all this diversity is a determination to set high standards in developing and communicating knowledge, and thus to make important contributions to human understanding of major societal and global issues.
Our Academy is one of four within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. We are proud to work alongside our colleagues in the other three academies to advance knowledge and learning across the arts, humanities and social sciences. We are also proud of our contribution to the continuing development of Hong Kong Baptist University, building on our institution’s distinguished history. Our work is grounded in our location within our community, but always looking outwards – from the Greater Bay Area to our many connections right across the globe.
We welcome you to find out more about the work being done in our Academy. We also welcome any feedback about this site, or about any aspect of our work in GSIS.
